Ballroom of Romance

within 5km of the North West Trail

The Rainbow Ballroom in Glenfarne was built in early 1934 by the late John McGivern, a native of Brockagh, Glenfarne and well-known across Sligo.

After emigrating from Glenfarne to the U.S.A he returned to his native Glenfarne in the early thirties where he purchased a plot if land at a crossroads where he built the hall, locally known as the "Nissan Hut". The hall opened its doors for the first time in early 1934, know then as McGivern’s Dance Hall and over the next two decades the hall went from success to success. Following modernisation it was renamed the Ballroom of Romance and attracted crowds to variety performances and showbands from across Ireland.

Subject of a film The Ballroom of Romance Glenfarne people are very proud of the fact that the Rainbow Ballroom in Glenfarne is the original and only genuine Ballroom of Romance, not only in Ireland but also in the world.
