Queen Maeve's Grave
within 10km of the North West Trail
High above Sligo Town stands the hill of Knocknarea which commands a broad view of the environs and can be seen from very far away, thus the grave site was constructed as a reminder of Queen Maeve's greatness.
Queen Maeve’s Grave is a likely Passage approximately 5m in height and with a diameter of roughly 15m. Legend tells that a Celtic queen by the name of Maeve is buried beneath this huge flat topped mound of stones. No-one knows for sure if she is to be found underneath this huge pile of stones About 30m to the ENE of this mound is another smaller structure which is circular being 4m in diameter. The huge stone mound apparently grew to such a size as everyone coming up to the mound brought with them a stone as tribute. Of added interest are the marine fossils to be found on many of the rocks.
